'More Celebrity News ►► http://bit.ly/SubClevverNews Kim Kardashian’s latest ad for her new beauty line KKW has some people buggin. But is it as horrible as they’re making it out to be? They’re calling it black face! Is it though? You be the judge… Kim K is taking a page out of Kylie’s handbook by launching her own cosmetics line. And to promote her first product which is a contouring kit, Kanye’s wife posted this image of herself in heavy contoured makeup. At first, people dug it. But then some online started accusing her of blackface, which I’ll admit at first I was like- huh? Where? Ain’t nobody got costume make up on trying to be a caricature of black folks. And black face is a horrible practice that started in the early 1900s and still happens today when white folks paint themselves black to either poke FUN of black folks and reduce them to tropes and stereotypes, or when, say in the case of a certain white actor who played the Prince of Persia, they cover someone in LOTS of tanner to play a different ethnicity. Not making fun of brown people per say. Just basically saying actual brown folks aren’t good enough to play brown folks, so we’ll use a white actor instead. Not cool. Now cut to Kim Kardashian on her Instagram post. People tweeted things like QUOTE “Black women get told to lighten. Meanwhile, Kim spends her entire career in perpetual Black face and is lauded for her beauty.” Another wrote “I love Kim but that’s def black face in the form of makeup she is nowhere near that dark.” Then another user shared this side-by-side image of Kim. The user said Kim’s real color was on the left and her fake color was on the right. Though actually neither photo was raw. Both were photo shopped. As the daughter and granddaughter of photographers, I’ve learned there’s no such thing as skin color only being one absolute tone. Lighting changes how we perceive skin, as well as a whole slew of other factors. So the question remains- is this blackface? IS kim using make up here to darken her skin in a way that disregards the black community, or is this just a photography style where you dial up the shadows and the contrast in the picture? One image. So many opinions. Let me know yours below or on twitter @Miriamisa, or Insta @Miriam_isa then click here for all the deets about her upcoming beauty line!
