The Sugamo area in Tokyo has a long history that stretches back to the Edo period (1603-1868). During this time, there was a road called Nakasendo that connected Edo (now Tokyo) to Kyoto. The first rest stations of Nakasendo were located along present-day Jizo-dori Shopping Street; as a result the area prospered. In 1891, Koganji Temple was moved from Ueno to Sugamo, drawing even more visitors and business, and Sugamo Station opened in 1903. The Koganji Temple is home to the Togenuki Jizo (“splinter-removing Buddha”) which is said to cure ailments. It is a popular place for older folks in the area to visit and pray for their health. Koganji Temple hosts small festivals on the 4th, 14th and 24th of every month. On those days Jizo-Dori is closed off to traffic and you can find even more food stalls all along the street. Sugamo (巣鴨) literally translates to “duck nest” and its mascot is a duck character, which you can see on merchandise and signs all along Jizo-dori Shopping Street.
