'TWO things to learn: 1) Layered Background 2) Shooting small food items Background does not always mean a flat surface with colour or texture. You can create a dramatic background with multiple objects and colours too. Keep the food item close to the camera. Keep smaller items around the food and push the bigger elements to the back. Make sure there is no dominating colour in the background. Your focus should be the food item at the front. You can partially blur the background if required.
