'How long we can survive without food and water | Talks and Vlogs | Really?? I am astonished at the answers to this question … and how wrong most of them are … not just a little wrong … completely wrong. The references to 21 days as the limit to the amount of time one can go without food are absolutely wrong. Do a Google of “water fasting” and you will find a whole community of people that regularly go with no food - only water for extended periods of time. I do it myself for 5 (sometimes 10) days every 3 months … and I keep working and exercising when I do it (and for the record, nothing about me is special). There are thousands of examples of regular people that do 30 - 40 days or more. I think that the longest documented water fast was a morbidly obese Irishman who went 382 days under medical supervision with only water and mineral supplements. The health benefits of water fasting are extremely well documented. As for going without water … that is called “Dry Fasting” (i.e. No Food and No water for a period of time). Again, Google it and you will find hundreds of documented cases of people doing extended “dry fasts” … some up to 9 days or more. I am not aware of a documented limit although one of the previous Quora responses mentioned a prisoner that went 18 days (Wow!). If you go on YouTube right now and search “Dry Fasting” there are pages of detailed testimonials of individual experiences for 3 and 5 day dry fasts. I have done 3 days myself and I did not even change my regular routine in the process. I was an experienced “water faster” when I did this … and I did my research … but I’m still very much alive and a good deal healthier since I started my fasting practice. Again, the health benefits are well documented. (although dry fasting is less researched than water fasting and is only recommended for experienced fasters). In general, during any fast, the benefits come from your body burning fat instead of glycogen (because it is all gone), your body burning through dead and pre-cancerous cells that are of no value (i.e. Autophagy) and your body excreting released toxins (the smell is awful!). At the same time, you produce increases in HGH and accelerate your ability to heal. I am not sure that I fully understand the mechanism for the increased healing, but I can report from personal experience that the effect is significant and invigorating. The difference between dry fasting and water fasting is that these processes occur more quickly during a dry fast. On a water fast, I will lose about 1.5 pounds a day (once the water weight is gone and the bowels are empty after the 1st 3 days). During a dry fast, I lose about 3 pounds a day. I have also found that I go into ketosis much faster during a dry fast and thus my overall fat loss from dry fasting is noticeably greater. Fun fact … your body will actually produce 1.5 liters of water a day on its own as a by-product of the breakdown of your fat cells during a dry fast Related searches..
